Mounted Noble Tribesman from Mali

Mounted Noble Tribesman from MaliThis is an Equestrian statue of a Kala nobleman from Ségou, Mali.

This is an impressive piece of masterful carving. Stylized to depict a nobleman with a pointed headdress both horse and master are proud of their position in society.

The ownership of a horse is already a status symbol. His hands suggest the recognition of an ancestor. Often a face is carved into an open hand. It is a very heavy piece made from a redwood circa 20th century.

3’ 92 cm high 14” 36 cm across

Provenance purchased from Harvey Derrien by private collector, 2000. Approx value £350
