Bronze Statuette of a Horseman from India

Bronze Statuette of a Horseman from IndiaThis is a very decorative and stylized satuette from Southern India.

The horse is caprisioned with bands and collars decorated with tassels and probably bells going right up the horse’s neck. The mane is plaited.

The jockey sits serenely with very short stirrups and stylized arms. The cantle of the saddle sits proud of the horse’s back. The person riding the horse is of some distinction judging by the head dress. It is temping to think this figure is of religious importance.

The statuette has a patina which suggests age.

Height 10” (25 cm) x 7” (18 cm.)

Provenance purchased by Dale Durfee in Rajasthan. On loan.
