Equestrian Statuette of Couple Going to Market

Equestrian Statuette of Couple Going to MarketThis delightful piece is so very typical of the Staffordshire ware. Staffordshire pottery figurines were made from the 1800’s through to the 1900’s.

This bucolic scene is part of the tradition of the picturesque in English art. This one may well be a copy as there is a lack of quality, but the spirit is there.

During this period nature was studied and scenes of arcadia, of an earthly paradise, were highly popular. The way of life of the farm workers was thought to be an appropriate subject matter for paintings and other artifacts. This would have been considered charming and a little quaint.

5” (13 cm) base 8” (20 cm) in height

Provenance, purchased by Dale Durfee, on loan.
