Dogon Saddle from Mali

Dogon Saddle from MaliThis saddle is highly decorative it has a wooden tree padded and lined with sack cloth. The framework is stretched over with a wet raw hide leather which once it is dried in the sun is stained and then painted.

It was made in 2006 by a man the Dogon tribe who is well known for his saddlery in Mali. The high cantle and pommel can be seen in some of the statuettes in the collection. This design of saddle is typical of Africa.

Provenance: purchased from Harvey Derrien 2003 by private collector £250.
