Jockey: Joseph Taylor

joseph-taylorThe Thirsk November Meeting, 1935, was a very successful one for J. A. Taylor, who rode four winners, including the Thirby Plate, on Mr W. H. Thorpe’s London Pride. Eldest of three jockey brother. Jo was born at Leeds in 1895. He was apprenticed to John Dawson’s stable at Newmarket, and rode his first winner when fourteen years old.

For many seasons he has remained one of the leading jockeys of the North, having been chiefly successful on the horses trained by Peacock’s stable at Middleham, for whom he won the 1927 Ayr gold Cup on Matenax.
