Cothestone Winner of the Derby, 1843
Cothestone was by Touchstone a prolific sire with 343 winners to his name. It was his owner John Bowes second sucess in the Derby. He was called after a village near Durham and has a selection of celebrated cheeses. He was not an impressive yearling, but went on to win the Riddlesworth Stakes, the Column Produce Stakes and the Two Thousand Guineas. He was ridden by the phenomenal ‘Bill’ William Scott, and was trained by John Scott at Malton. He also won the Gratwicke Stakes at Goodwood, but did not win the St Leger beaten by a head from Nutwith. Franck Butler was riding him and some said he was a bit over confident and got caught napping, not aware he was being tracked. Often happens. He did not win as a four year old and was sold to Lord Spencer and retired at stud at Althorp.
Glass prints have a wonderful vibrance of colour and were very popular in the middle of the 19th century. this is a beautiful example of one, with its typical varnished wooden frame inset with a gold leafed, riser.
