Guiseppe Garibaldi
Guiseppe Garibaldi was born 4th July 1807 in Nice he died June 2nd 1882 in Caprera Italy.
His image would have been very popular in the mid 19th century and a good seller for Staffordshire pottery.
Garibaldi’s family were fishermen; he became a merchant captain gaining his master’s certificate. Serving in the Navy 1833-34. He came under the influence of Mazzini the prophet of Italian Nationalism he took part in a mutiny intended to provoke a revolution in Piedmont. This failed and he escaped to France. But was condemned to death by an Italian court. From 1836-1848 he exiled to South America. He seems to have had one great love, Anna Maria Riberiro de Silva, who stayed faithful to him till her death. Still in the Navy he won a small but impressive battle of San Antonia in 1846. Returning to Italy he was elected a member of the Roman Assembly. He continued to believe in national liberty and freedom. He had married Anita, in 1842 and had three children. Alexandre Dumas, author of hundreds of books, but more well known the life of D’Artagnan in, The Three Musketeers, was a great admirer of Garibaldi,
