Jockey: Charlie Smirk

Charlie SmirkAs first jockey to the H.H. Aga Khan, Charlie Smirke won the 1936 Derby on Mahmoud, in the record time of 2 mins 33 secs. His other successes for this owner include the 1935 St Leger on Bahram, and the Chester Cup and the Manchester Cup in 1929 on Dark Japan.

Smirke was born in Deptford and served his apprenticeship with Stanley Wootton. 1934 was a most successful season for him including wins in the Derby and St Leger on Windsor Lad, when he equalled what was then the record time in both events. He also won the Eclipse Stakes, 1935, on Windsor Lad.
