Miniature Horse Shoes
These tiny horse shoes about an inch across where made for myself and my sister by a blacksmith somewhere in the region of Blackpool Sands Bay, near Dartmouth, Dorset. My father came from a renown family in Dorset called the Burts and he knew and loved Dorset. I recall on that trip we took a chain link ferry, probably across the Dart. The date must be around 1956. I stood and watched this huge man nimbley turn these tiny bits of metal into horse shoes; he even put holes into them. I was captivated. I recall the forge and its heat and the darkness inside. What a treat. Sadly I don’t have his name. Watching them being made has remained with me for my entire life. So here they are.
