Troopers Spurs

Spurs are purpose designed. Knights in armour did not move their legs back because when jousting that could cause a fall. So spurs had to have long shanks to the rowel  or the point so that by hardly moving the leg the horse can be spurred. Not all spurs are cruel. Fred Archer the famous jockey had spurs that had a spike inside the spur which was on a spring and when he spurred his horse the spike went into the horse’s side. It was not unusal to see racehorses coming in blooded.  The length of the neck of the troopers spur was there because with kit and a heavy uniform the trooper would find it hard to move hsi leg back.  Dress spurs had a pin which locked into the troopers boot so no straps could be seen. spurs had swan necks or were straight. they had rowels of different sizes from quite large 3inch across to very small. These spurs wer gilded and the small rowell was set into the end of the spur.
