A Treatise On The Bits of Horses, Bracy Clark
The first edition of this remarkable book was published in 1810. Bracy Clark was a Veterinarian. 1771- 1860. He wrote no less than 20 treatise on various disorders of the horse. He specialised in problems of the hoof such as Canker, Founder, (Laminitis) Thrush, and the bones and structure of the horse’s foot. He also wrote about two ancient horse shoes found near Silbury Hill in Wiltshire. He wrote on the art of shoeing, a guide to the shoeing Forge. He wrote about the first nailed horse shoe.
What is not so well known is that he wrote this interesting book on bitting. I discovered that the Welcome Foundation have it and it is available in PDF form for anyone. So I have made it available here for my readers. I found it an inspiring book which covers a range of subjects from bitting to the behaviour of the horse. I can highly recommend it.
